She played for her high school and later for Penn State University (2003-2006). She first appeared on the United States national team at the 2008 Four National Tournament in January 2008. She has since played for the team over 100 times. She is a two-time FIFA World Cup Champion in 2015 and 2019, UEFA Champions League winner in 2008, NWSL Best XI in 2014, 2017, 2019, and 2023, FIFA FIFPro World XI in 2016, and National Women Soccer League Champion in 2023. She announced her retirement and played her last game on November 12, 2023, as a soccer player and won the championship. She plans to become a professional and national team coach and earned her coaching license in 2018.
