Canada: The community mourns the death of three people in Lake near Humbolt

Chris Novecosky, a Canadian man, died attempting to save others who fell through the ice on a lake 10 minutes south of the Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Canada, on November 4, 2023.
What happened to Chris Novecosky?
Royal Canadian Mounted Police briefed the media on Monday about the heartbreaking incident on the lake near the Humboldt city. The RCMP responded to a call on Saturday, November 4, 2023, around 2:20 p.m., to a house on Humboldt Lake to help the Humboldt Fire Department and local paramedics who were responding to a report of several people falling through the ice into the lake.
According to the witnesses, five people were in the water, and three were visible in the open water where the ice near the shore was broken. A woman and two girls were pulled out of the lake by firefighters. The woman and one of the girls were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment: the second girl, Ava Novecosky, a Grade two student at St. Dominic School in Humboldt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two men who went into the water to rescue them did not resurface; RCMP divers recovered their bodies on Sunday. They were identified as Chris Novecosky and Joe Novecosky, extended family members of the deceased girl.
The heart-wrenching incident is a stark reminder of the importance of exercising water safety. The Humboldt Mayor Michael Behiel, who knew the victims personally through the small community, said, ‘It’s a somber day’ because of what happened. “They were salt-of-the-earth people,” he said, “they are small-town prairie folk, and they were great people overall.” He also cautioned citizens to remain vigilant near sizeable open water bodies and pay attention to water safety rules.
“think twice before you venture out onto the ice to make sure it is thick enough and solid enough to support you,” Behiel said.
