Edward Hagedorn, Filipino Politician and Ex-Mayor, Passed Away at 76

Edward Solon Hagedorn, a renowned Filipino politician and former mayor of Puerto Princesa City, passed away on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. He announced in February 2023 that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Sadly, he lost his battle with cancer and passed away. His family shared the sad news of his passing in a post on the official page of Rep. Hagedorn, which said,

“With heavy hearts, we inform you of the passing of a beloved friend, brother, husband, father, and public servant, Edward Solon Hagedorn.”

The family also extended their gratitude towards the community, who showered them with support and kept his memory alive in warm regards.

“On behalf of Cong. Ed, his family, staff and closest kin – we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of you for your love and support, for joining us in celebrating his wonderful life, and most importantly…for being witnesses to the remarkable journey he lived with such zest.”

Who was Edward Hagedorn?

Edward Hagedorn was born on October 12, 1946, to Alexander Hagedorn and Gliceria Solon. He was a former mayor of Puerto Princesa City, a city in the island province of Palawan. Hagedorn was first elected as mayor of Puerto Princesa in May 1992 when the City was the capital of Palawan. It was later declared a highly urbanized city and became a province. Hagedorn’s tenure as mayor of the City began on July 1, 1992, to June 30, 2013.

He was prohibited from running for a third three-year term in 2001, based on the Constitution of the Philippines. But the leading members of Princesa led an election recall against the mayor who replaced Hagedorn, resulting in a historic decision from the Supreme Court of Philippines in November 2002 that enabled Hagedorn to run again as mayor of the City.

He championed accomplishing a harmonious combination of environment-friendly development and tourism. His dedication made Puerto Princesa one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature for being an eco-tourism destination. His other notable attributes are the establishment of the City Baywalk, the construction of the City Coliseum and the New City Hall.

Under his tenure as mayor of the City, Puerto Princesa gained popularity as one of the most famous eco-tourism destinations in the Philippines and became a worldwide model for environment protection. The City earned a place in the Hall of Fame. It was also awarded the “cleanest and greenest” component city.

After his tenure as mayor ended, he ran for senator in the 2013 midterm election as an independent candidate but lost. He ran for a seat in the House of Representatives in the 2022 elections and won.

His accomplishments earned him popularity and respect around the world. In 1995, a biopic movie titled ‘Hagedorn’ was made on his life, and his character was played by actor Fernando Poe Jr.

He was well respected by his peers and loved by people. His dedication towards the progress of his people earned him a place in the hearts of his nation forever. His legacy lives on with his contributions towards the development of his beloved City. He touched many lives with his service. The community honoured his memory and paid tribute to him by acknowledging his hard work and dedication. They offered condolences to the family and loved ones and mourned the loss of an invaluable human being. The world shall never see his like again.

The provisional office of Plawan released a statement that said,

“The Provincial Government of Palawan deeply mourns the passing of Congressman Edward Hagedorn, who has dedicatedly served Puerto Princesa City and Palawan.

Congressman Hagedorn’s commitment and patriotism are reflected in his indefatigable service to the government. His legacy lives on in his family and the generation of Palaweños.”

Rex Villegas, Deputy District Governor at Rotary International, said,

“Today, we honour the life and legacy of a remarkable public servant whose dedication and passion have forever transformed the beautiful City of Puerto Princesa and the province of Palawan. Congressman Edward Hagedorn was a shining example of selflessness, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people he served.

Palawan owes a debt of gratitude to Congressman Edward Hagedorn. His tireless effort and visionary leadership have left an indelible mark in the province,” he continues,

“Rest in peace, Cong. Edward, Your selfless dedication, remarkable achievements, and unwavering commitment to the people of Palawan will never be forgotten.
Thank you for your trust and confidence in me. May your soul find eternal peace.”
