Hon. Maso Karipe, a Member of Parliament representing the newly established Porgera Paiela constituency, passed away on November 7, 2023, after a long illness.

He initially ran as an independent candidate and won the Porgera-Paiela Open seat in the 2022 National General Election. Subsequently, he joined the PANGU party. This marked his first term in the 11th National Parliament.
In his first term, he was appointed as the Chairman of Emergency on September 2, 2022, and became a member of the Public Accounts Parliament Committees under the Marape-Rosso administration. His death was announced by Àl Èx through a Facebook post in which he praised Karipe’s dedication to education and students’ well-being, as well as his efforts to enhance human resources in Porgera.
Karipe had taken the initiative to provide school fee assistance to various universities in the country. His sudden passing left the community in shock and sadness. The news of Karipe’s passing has flooded social media with prayers and condolences, but no additional information about his identity has been found on social media platforms.

Tributes have poured in, with Daily Digest posting on Facebook, “Hon. Maso Karipe, MP for the new Porgera Paiala electorate, has passed away after a prolonged battle with illness. This is a deeply saddening moment for the people of the new electorate 😭🇵🇬. The loss of our leaders, especially MPs, appears to be an unfortunate trend.”
