MANILA: A veteran actor, comedian, and singer, Jograd Dela Torre, has passed away.

Jograd Dela Torre, a Filipino actor, comedian, and singer, died at 61 after battling a liver-related illness. His sister, Arlene McCullough, announced the sad news of his passing on Wednesday in a post on her social media handle. The post read,
“Everyone, prayers, and love for my brother Jograd Dela Torre, who joined with Papa Eddie, Mama Betty, Boy Antoy, and Manong Bebot,” she wrote.
What happened to Jograd Dela Torre?
Dela Torre died of a liver disease. He had been struggling with liver disease and had been hospitalized several times. He shared in an interview that he wished to live for more years, but he was also ready if God decided to take him. The struggle for life was challenging because of the medication, but he fought bravely until the disease cut his life short, leaving his loved one grieving.
Who was Jograd Dela Torre?
Jograd Dela Torre was a renowned artist who dazzled the world with his acting skills, comedic timing, and musical talents. He rose to fame as an emerging teenage celebrity in the late 1970s with the popular TV show ‘Student Canteen’ and was referred to as ‘John Travolta of the Philippines’
He had since made a name for himself with his live performances, recording novelty songs, and had worked in nearly twenty movies. He received widespread appreciation for his ‘jack of all trades’ role in the movie “Okleng Tokleng.” He has worked on notable projects like Mirror, mirror On the Wall, Alias Baby Tsina, Bala at Lipstick, and many more. He was also a co-host of Nora Aunor’s TV show ‘Superstar’ from the late 1980s to early 1990s.
He is also well-known for his political views. He sang the ‘Kawatan’ song at an anti-pork barrel rally in 2013. The song was his popular spoof on corrupt government officials who live luxurious lives at the expense of people experiencing poverty. It has since become national anthem of anti-pork barrel movement.
