Nation of Islam community mourns Joshua Farrakhan, son of religious leaders of Louis Farrakhan and Khadijah Farrakhan

Joshua Farrakhan, son of well-known Minister Louis Farrakhan and Mother Khadijah Farrakhan of the organization the Nation of Islam, has died. He was 64 years old. His niece shared the news of his tragic passing on Instagram, saying,

“Today we lost my uncle Joshua Farrakhan.” She shared that the tragic death happened six months after she lost her father. Joshua consoled her during the difficult time by telling her stories of her father, his best friend.

“Uncle Josh you will be extremely missed by me, your family, your friends, the people’s lives you touched, and the Nation of Islam,” She wrote.

What happened to Joshua Farrakhan?

The details of his untimely death have not been shared with the public. The Nation of Islam also announced the tragic news in their congregation and posted the announcement’s video on their social media. The cause of death was not provided. It is unclear what caused his untimely death.

Who was Joshua Farrakhan?

Joshua Farrakhan was the fifth of nine children of renowned minister Louis Farrakhan and Mother Khadijah Farrakhan. He led a very private life; hence, little is learned about him. He shared his family’s faith, personal experiences, and challenges they had to endure and overcome with their faith in Allah.

In 2001, then 42-year-old Joshua Farrakhan was beaten and shot along with a woman at a Chicago residence. He was visiting an acquaintance with a woman when two men burst in, “battered him, battered his friend, and shot him twice, once in each leg,” said a Chicago Police spokesperson. He was in fair condition and made a full recovery. His friend remained unharmed and did not need hospital treatment.

His father, Louis Farrakhan, is a prominent religious figure and African-American nationalist. He is the leader of the Nation of Islam. He used to be a calypso singer with a stage name, Calypso Gene. He gave up singing to become minister of mosques in Boston and Harlem.

He was appointed National Representative of the Nation of Islam by then Leader of NOI, Elijah Muhammad. He was known by the name Louis X but later named Louis Farrakhan. In 1981, he officially adopted the name’ Nation of Islam’ for the organization and established its headquarters at Mosque Maryam in Chicago, Illinois.
