Juvelyn Arroyo and 2 Others Killed in Uber Crash in South Los Angeles

According to authorities, on August 27, 2023, three persons were killed early on Saturday after an Uber was t-boned at a South Los Angeles intersection close to the Westmont neighborhood of unincorporated Los Angeles County.

The collision injured two additional passengers in the Uber. Along with the driver, there were five individuals in the Uber. The collision took the lives of three female passengers in the back seat.

They have been named Kimberly Izquierdo, 27, Juvelyn Arroyo, 23, and Veronica Amezola, 23. Two of them killed were sisters, according to the police, who did not specify which of the three were connected.

About Incident

The California Highway Patrol stated that the incident occurred just before 5:30 a.m. near South Vermont Avenue and West Century Boulevard. According to officials, the Uber vehicle, a black Honda, was struck by a white Mercedes traveling west on Century after running a red light.

Witnesses claimed that the speeding white Mercedes Benz, which only had the driver inside, crashed with the black Honda, which had four passengers in addition to the driver. The suspect’s car “spun out of control and landed on the center median after striking the victim’s vehicle,” according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department.

One woman died after being thrown from the vehicle, and the other two female passengers died inside the Honda. A second passenger, a male in the front seat, was taken to the hospital and is now in stable condition. The female Uber driver, also taken to the hospital, is critical. The Mercedes’ driver was also brought to a hospital in critical condition.

As the Los Angeles Police Department looked into the collision, the crossing remained closed this morning. The driver who struck an Uber carrying four passengers in South Los Angeles while running a red light has been arrested, according to the police.

Following a police investigation, it was discovered that Gregory Black, 31, was allegedly at the wheel of the speeding Mercedes Benz that ran a red light at the intersection of S. Vermont Avenue and W. Century Boulevard, t-boning the Uber passing through the area. He has since been arrested and is being charged with vehicular manslaughter.
