Larry Reid, long-time Radio host and cherished member of Randolph County, loses battle to illness.

Larry Reid, long-time Radio host in Randolph County, North Carolina, passed away after losing battle to an illness on Saturday, September 16, 2023. He was also known as ‘the Voice of Asheboro.’ The city named him honorary Mayer on Friday, September 15, in his honor.
Who was Larry Reid?
Larry Reid was born on April 25, 1961, in Concord, North Carolina. He was the son of Reverend Maxine Reid Woody and Reverend Charles H. Woody. He graduated from Cabarrus County School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Radio/Television and Film with a minor in Music. He worked at the radio station WKXR for more than thirty years. He was station manager and on-air talent at WKXR and WZOO
Larry served his community on the Habitat for Humanity board, the United Way, and the CUOC Board, and he was a member of the Board of Trustees at Randolph Community College.
He was involved with many charitable organizations. He won many awards for his contribution to the community. He was awarded the Citizen of the Year award by the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce.
To recognize his invaluable contribution to the community, Larry was named honorary Mayer of the city of Asheboro for a day, one day before his death.
He was loved by all who had the privilege to know him. His friends describe him as humble and kind. He could have a conversation with anyone. As a host on the radio show, he would make his guests feel comfortable. His guest describes the experience of being on the show as ” anything but nail biting” and “pure fun.”
Eddie Burks, an Asheboro city councilman, was a close friend of Reid’s and said that Reid was a genuine person. If he told you he loved you, he meant it. He said, “He is more about serving other than he is about winning awards for himself.”
Obituary and funeral
His family shared the news of his demise in a post on social media. His Obituary has been posted on Pugh Funeral Home’s website.
The visitation will be held on September 21, 2023, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, and from 4:00 pm to 5:45 pm at Sunset Avenue Church of God, Asheboro. Funeral service will follow at 6:00 pm the same day.
The family has requested that instead of flowers, they donate to the Larry D. Reid Minority Scholarship Fund at Randolph Community College or the United Way of Randolph County.

The Randolph community loved Larry Reid. He was a cherished member of the society who touched the lives of many. The community mourns the loss of its beloved member and has offered their respects and condolences to friends and family.
Crystal Malcolm Davidson wrote on social media,
“So sad to see this. Larry was always such a joy to listen to. Praying for the family may god surround them with love and comfort for the coming days.”
Bryce Wilson wrote,
“A sad day for WKXR and Randolph County. Larry was the heart and soul of the station. He loved the listeners and they loved him back. Thoughts and prayers to his family.”
