Carl Hans Beliard, a young 18-year-old teenager and a basketball player at Salem State University, died in a tragic shooting incident. According to the reports, the shooting occurred after a Halloween party celebration ended and a few miles away from the school, where a young man was found dead inside the car on Forest Avenue with deadly wounds.
What happened to Carl Hans?
On November 1, 2023, at around 1:24 a.m., law enforcement authorities responded to an emergency call of a deadly shooting. They swiftly reached the location of 22 Forest Ave, where they found a young boy identified as a student of Salem State University. The young boy was found inside the car with wounds and immediately shifted to Salem Hospital, but he was declared dead.
According to Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker, the tragic incident is actively investigating by the state police detectives along with the Essex County District Attorney’s office and the Salem Police Department to identify the circumstances of the incident.
A report from Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker was released that an 18-year-old teenager, Missael Pena Canela, who is from Salem, was arrested on Wednesday night for shooting Carl Hans.
Michael Pena Canela was scheduled to appear in Salem District Court on Thursday morning.
The recent reports by the officials informed that the shooting did not result from any act of violence and also declared that it was an observation of no threats to the Salem state community.

Carl Hans Beliard was a cherished member of the basketball team at Salem State University and a resident of Worcester. He was a graduate of North High School in Worcester and also a champion-winning team member. He showed his sportsmanship prowess in the field and was admired by his peers and coaches. His dedication made him selected as a member of the National Honor Society. He inspired his teammates and students and taught them with his outstanding mentorship.
Student Tragedy | Salem State University, released a statement regarding the tragic incident, paid their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and showed relief on the arrest of the culprit.
University management called off all the classes that were scheduled on November 2 to mourn and celebrate the life of a teenager. The university also announced the initiation of a memorial fund to help Carl Hans’s family in this difficult time.
The vigil ceremony was scheduled to be at the O’Keefe Center on November 2, and people, along with deceased family members, were encouraged to unite and pay tribute and celebrate the life and memories of Carl Hans.
