The community of Croydon was left shocked as Elianne Andam, a teen murdered, was on her way to school.
Elianne Andam, a teenage girl 15, was brutally murdered on her way to school in Croydon, London, early morning on Wednesday, September 27, 2023. She was attacked with a foot-long knife and sustained multiple stab wounds. A 17-year-old boy has been arrested for questioning.
What happened to Elianne Andam?
She was on her to her School, Old Palace of John Whitgift School, in Croydon, and had just gotten off a double-decker bus with her friends when she was attacked. Unconfirmed reports say the attacker was her ex-boyfriend, and wanted to reconcile with her. Upon her refusal, he took out the weapon and attacked her. But the cause of the murder has not been confirmed by the Police.
Witnesses say that the bus driver and other passers-by attempted to save her.
Police, paramedics, and an air ambulance were called to Wellesley Road, near the Whitgift Centre, at about 8:30 British Summer Time on Wednesday, but sadly, Elianne could not survive. A 17-year-old boy was arrested shortly afterwards. The Police have been given an extra 24 hours to question him. An investigation is underway by the Metropolitan Police.
Det. Ch. Insp. Rebecca Woodsford released a statement that said,
“My thoghts and the thoughts of my team are with Elianne’s family. This is a deeply upsetting time for them and we will do everything we can to support them.”
She said that they are making good progress in their investigation. They have recovered the CCTV from the area and interviewed several witnesses. Forensic scientists have examined the scene. She has confirmed that from the inquiry, they have established that the crime occurred outside on Wellesley Road near the bus stop rather than on board the bus. She thanked the people of Croydon who have shown them support during their investigation. She added that Elianne’s death has left “many people upset.”
The community held a vigil at the scene.
A vigil was held on Thursday evening at the scene of the attack. Family and friends gathered to share their grief and pay tribute to Elianne inside the police cordon. Family said that they are “broken” by her “senseless death”. The heartbroken community left cards and flowers at the scene to pay tribute to Elianne as the group members embraced each other in tears.
Officers of Metropolitan held a minute’s silence in Croydon before leaving flowers.
London Fire Brigade left a handwritten note at the scene that said, “Our heart is broken. We are so sorry for your loss and are here as part of your community to stand with you. LFB”

“What a stunning girl and how very very sad and shocking what happened to her such a cruel waste of life sincere condolences to her family.”
Kevin Kerr wrote,
“I woke up this morning, still with a feeling of disgust and sadness as our Borough Croydon, has lost another bright young life to the heinous dark shadow of the blade, the 16th young person to be brutally slain this year.”
