Jackson Heights, Queens Train accident: A young Guatemalan woman died after falling on the train tracks during a medical emergency
Jessica Marleny Ajzac Guarcas, a young woman from Guatemala, was killed by a Train in Jackson Heights Subway in Queens on Tuesday morning, October 17, 2023. According to the reports, she suffered a medical condition and fell on the tracks.
What happened to Jessica Marleny Ajzac Guarcas?
Officials say, Jessica, 18, was standing at the Jackson Heights- Roosevelt Avenue station when she suffered a medical emergency. She collapsed on the platform and fell on the tracks just before 6:40 a.m.
The operator of the oncoming train noticed the woman fall and pulled the emergency brakes but could not stop in time. Medical Emergency Units attempted to save her, but she succumbed to her injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
New York City Transit President Richard Davey spoke to the media regarding the tragedy and said,
“We lost a young New Yorker this morning in Queens, a young woman, 18 years old, who by all accounts investigators tell us had some kind of a medical episode and fell on the tracks and was struck and killed by a train today.”
He continued, “I just wanted to start by saying our hearts and prayers from the NYC Transit family go out to her family. By all accounts, this was just a transit accident that sadly occurred today (Tuesday).”
Who was Jessica Marleny Ajzac Guarcas?
Jessica was a young woman, age 18. She came to the United States of America two years ago from Guatemala, where her parents still live. She was living with a friend in Queens. Her two older sisters also live in the city.
They told the media that Jessica was on her way to work at an Empanada Restaurant in Manhattan. They said she did not have any known medical condition. Her sister Cristina Ajzac Guarcas said, “She was a good person, a hard worker, and never had any problems.”
No criminality has been suspected, Police have reviewed surveillance camera footage that captured the tragic moment. Officials say no criminality is suspected. Subway service was heavily disrupted for several hours on Tuesday morning as police investigated.
The service was cleared for use, and trains began operating again on a normal schedule. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family who suffered an inconsolable loss. May she rest in peace.
