Moorhead High School Coach Jason Thielges commits suicide.
Jason Thielges, a Moorhead High School football coach and business teacher at the School’s Career Academy, passed away unexpectedly. His sudden, unexpected death has left hundreds of student-athletes, coaches, and friends saddened and family aggrieved.
Who was Jason Thielges?
Jason Thielges was a teacher and football coach at Moorhead High School. Before that, he was head football coach at Davis High School when their program started in 2009. Under his leadership, the school’s team won a state championship in 2014. He stepped down from that role in 2019, which was taken over by his good friend and coaching colleague Wayne Werremeyer.
Werremeyer spoke with a local news magazine and said ‘no one worked harder on the field than Thielges.’
Remembering his friend whose astonishing life was cut short by his tragic, untimely death he said, “Top notch. His philosophy was he wasn’t going to let any kid outwork him.”
He mentored young athletes with the set standard of high expectations he also had for himself.
“he demanded excellence,” Warremeyer continued, “And he showed the kids how to strive for excellence.”
His high standards earned him enormous respect from his students and among his colleagues. Everyone loved him.
“Kids loved him,” Werremeyer said. “You can tell that whenever you talk to a kid that he coached.”
Thielges and Werremeyer were close friends and worked together as coaches. Werremeyer was Thielges’ assistant coach during the 2014 state championship title run.
