Joey Sagal, the executive director of the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), passed away on Thursday morning, October 26, 2023. His death’s cause is still unknown.
Joseph “Joey” Sagal dedicated his life to helping his community and inspiring those around him by responding to hundreds of events while employed by several Maryland fire departments over the years.
Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company released his death news with a statement which said:
“The Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company announces with heavy hearts the untimely demise of longtime member Joseph Sagal. Joey, a resident of Carroll County, passed away early on Thursday.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Meredith, who is also a member of PVFC, and their children Grace and Hailey. Here at Pikesville, we will always cherish Joey as a fundamental family pillar and honor his legacy of public service. Funeral plans are not yet finalized.”
His sudden demise left the community in mourning and shock. Our Thoughts and Condolences go out to his family, friends and community in this tragic time; his funeral details have not been released publicly.

Joey worked for PVFC for over 13 years, four years as a tower lieutenant. His unconditional love, unwavering guidance, and joyful presence will always be missed by his coworkers at PVFC.
Recently, Joey was named the executive director of the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), a position that she holds professionally. Before that, he held top positions in the Federal Highway Administration and the Maryland State Highway Administration, as well as chief operating officer of the authority and chief engineer for operations.
He was a committed supporter of road safety and a nationally renowned authority on traffic management during motor vehicle emergencies. However, Joey was cherished by his loved ones; his legacy will always endure. Prayers for him, Rest in Peace, Joey Sagal.
