Mariah Smith, a 12-year-old girl and resident of Lake City, died of injuries sustained after being gunshot two weeks ago. The incident occurred on Thursday night, August 24, 2023, around 9:06 p.m., when Maria sat peacefully on her home’s couch.
Suddenly, a 14-year-old boy named Jatarious Rashad Fluellen fired continuously at their home, from where Mariah received a gunshot and got a severe injury, which caused her to death.
The neighbors immediately called Lake City Police, and the NW Long Street victim was shot, according to a Lake City Police Department. Responding cops arrived quickly and discovered 12-year-old Mariah Smith with a gunshot wound.
They immediately gave Mariah first aid while emergency medical services (EMS) continued to treat her wounds. Mariah unfortunately lost her life despite all attempts to save her.
A thorough investigation was conducted in the wake of this tragic incident, and a suspect, Jatarious Rashad Fluellen, 14 years old, was eventually found on August 28, 2023, and accused of Mariah’s Murder.
However, the reason behind shooting at Mariah’s home several times is still unknown. Police are still investigating this matter, and it’s important to remember that more arrests might be made as the investigation progresses.

Funeral and Memorial Services of Mariah Smith
Mariah’s funeral and burial customs have been released through Legacy.com’s official website, which states:
Mariah Reginae Smith, born on June 11, 2011, passed suddenly on August 24, 2023. She was the daughter of Rodney Smith and Todneisha Filer and the favourite granddaughter of Deadra Filer.
Todd Filer, Sr., the grandpa; Todd Filer, Jr.; Willie V. Mosley; the siblings Todrion, Jakhia, Sha’Leah, Ya’Maria, Antwan, and Da’dreion; and a large number of other grieving family members and friends are also left to enjoy cherished memories.
Visitation for Mariah Smith was done on September 8, 2023, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at New Day Spring Missionary Baptist Church, 709 NW Long St, Lake City, FL.
Mariah’s life celebration was held at noon, Saturday, September 9, 2023, at the Columbia County School Board, 372 W. Duval St., Lake City, FL.
The funeral arrangements have been made at COMBS FUNERAL HOME “The Caring Professionals”, 292 NE Washington St., Lake City Marq Combs Turner, L.F.D, where she has already been laid to rest. Prayers for Little Girl, Rest in Peace, Mariah Smith.
