Waltham Massachusetts Police Department mourns the loss of its dedicated officer, Paul Tracy, who lost his life in a hit-and-run crash.
Paul Tracy, a Waltham Massachusetts Police officer, and a utility worker were fatally injured in a hit-and-run crash on Wednesday afternoon, December 6, 2023. The driver went on to steal a police cruiser at knifepoint and crashed it before being arrested.
What happened at Waltham, Massachusetts?
According to Middle County District Attorney Marian Ryan, the heart-wrenching incident unfolded around 4 p.m. on Totten Pond Road when a 54-year-old driver, Peter Simon of Woodsville, New Hampshire, hit a jeep after a failed attempt at executing a U-turn.
Ryan said Simon righted his vehicle and continued for a quarter of a mile down the road when he hit 58-year-old Waltham Police Officer Paul Tracy and a 36-year-old National Grid worker from Cambridge, whose identity was not released. Both victims were fatally injured and passed away due to their injuries.
The utility workers were fixing a gas leak, and Officer Tracy was working as police detail at the National Grid worksite when Simon crashed his vehicle into them. Officer Tracy and a utility worker died from their injuries, and two other utility workers, one of whom was working in a hole at the time, were hospitalized.
Simon continued his rampage and hit at least two other vehicles before abandoning his vehicle and fleeing on foot, according to Ryan. He ran into a responding Waltham Police officer and allegedly stole his police cruiser at knifepoint. The police chased after him in a high-speed pursuit until Simon crashed the cruiser on a dead-end ally at Winter Street and attempted to run on foot again. He was caught shortly after and arrested.
Simon is charged with two counts of manslaughter and an armed robbery charge, but additional charges may be forthcoming, said Ryan. He is expected to be arraigned Thursday morning in Waltham District Court. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
The Law Enforcement Community Mourns Tracy
The Law Enforcement community came together to honor the fallen fellow officer, Paul Tracy. A procession was held to salute the fallen hero’s service, joined by all the Waltham police officers, first responders, EMT officers, and firefighter Department officers at Burlington Hospital.
“Paul Tracy served this great city distinction,” Waltham Police Chief Kevin O’Connell said, “He was a compassionate police officer and always looked out for the underdog. He was an amazing husband, a loving father, and a friend to all.”
