A queer artist and influencer from Ujjain, India, allegedly committed suicide after being bullied for a saree-wearing video.

Pranshu, a 16-year-old queer artist from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India, was found hanging at his residence on Tuesday, November 21, 2023. He was an influencer on Instagram with over 14,000 followers. It is believed that Pranshu committed suicide after facing immense online bullying for a video including him wearing a saree.

Who was Pranshu?

Pranshu was a queer artist and social media influencer. He was living with his single mother. The 16-year-old was a make-up artist and beauty and skincare enthusiast. He dazzled his followers with his creativity and talent. He was a self-taught artist who won everyone’s hearts with his refreshing takes, mesmerizing color combinations, and profound fashion sense. He was a class 10th student with a knack for creativity and art.

Despite being part of a conservative nation, he bravely shared snippets of his life on Instagram. He portrayed resilience and courage to come out as a queer person, especially in a nation that has not embraced change. He shared his talent and enthusiasm with the world through social media. But the cruel world was not ready to embrace change or at least give space for others to grow and be their authentic selves. He was heavily criticized for being an LGBTQIA+ individual. The amount of negativity he received took a toll on his mental health, and he died by suicide.

What happened to Pranshu?

According to the reports, he was found hanging at his residence in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India. The 16-year-old influencer lived with his single mother, but she was not home when the tragic incident happened. His tragic death by suicide comes after a week of intense bullying he faced on social media for a video he uploaded on Diwali wearing a saree. The video went viral but, unfortunately resulted in harassment, threats and degrading comments. It is believed the teen could not process the hatred and negativity of this magnitude and ended his life. Although, there was no suicide note present.

An investigation is underway to learn more about the circumstances which led to the tragic event. Preliminary reports suggest he committed suicide. Police are examining his cellphone to piece together more details connected to the incident.
