Martin Laciga, a Swiss athlete, died unexpectedly. On Friday, August 25, 2023, several social media platforms announced the retired beach volleyball player’s passing. His death’s cause is unknown yet.
Swiss Volley officially announced the sudden demise of Martin Laciga, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 48, through a Facebook post.
“Beach volleyball pioneer Martin Laciga is mourned by Swiss volleyball. In accordance with the agreement with the bereaved family, Swiss Volley has the painful duty to inform them of the passing of our honorary member, Martin Laciga.
He passed away last Tuesday, August 22, 2023. We are deeply affected and greatly shocked. Swiss Volley offers Martin’s family, relatives, friends, and acquaintances its sincere sympathy and wishes everyone strength and caution at this trying time. We will keep Martin in our grateful memories.”
Some stories claim that Martin perished from the suicide that he had attempted, but it’s not confirmed yet. Condolences and prayers for his family and community. Martin’s funeral and burial details are unknown.
About Martin Laciga
Martin Laciga, one of the greatest Swiss players ever, he is regarded as one of Switzerland’s founder of beach volleyball.
Over the course of 18 years, he had a number of international triumphs and helped the sport of beach volleyball advance. Martin was a triple European champion, a double European vice-champion, and a triple Swiss champion.
At the 1999 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Marseille, France; Martin earned the silver medal with his older brother Paul Laciga (born 1970) in the men’s beach team tournament.
Martin served as vice-world champion in the same year, he also achieved multiple Olympic Games top-10 finishes and was named the nation’s Sportsman of the Year for 1999.
These are historic performances for the game of beach volleyball in Switzerland. The Seelander and his brother Paul made substantial contributions that contributed to the development of beach volleyball.
The two brothers were constantly present between 1995 and 2004. Future commercial collaborations between Martin Laciga and Jefferson Bellaguarda, Jan Schneider, and Markus Egger were also very successful for him.
Beginning in Sydney, Australia, in 2000, he attended two consecutive Summer Olympics to represent his home nation.
