Mathew Perry, a renowned Hollywood actor famous for portraying the beloved character Chandler Bing on the hit NBC sitcom Friends, died unexpectedly at 54 at his home on Saturday, October 28, 2023. He was 54 years old.
Who was Mathew Perry?
Mathew Langford Perry was a notable American actor born on August 19, 1969, in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He became a television superstar with his onscreen character Chandler Bing on the hit NBC show Friends alongside Courtney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, and Lisa Kudrow.
He played the iconic character Chandler Bing, who always put a sarcastic spin on any exchange and amused everyone with his witty responses. He played the character brilliantly and had some of the best lines in the show.
He also worked in the feature films The Whole Nine Yards and its sequel, Three to Tango, Serving Sara and TV series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and Go On. He co-wrote, co-created, and produced Mr. Sunshine.
Contrasting to his onscreen life, Mathew struggled in his personal life for years with alcohol and substance abuse. He was open about his decades-long struggles with substance abuse and authored a memoir ‘Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing’ in 2022, in which he reflected on his struggles to get sober.
He spoke about a near-death experience where he had been on life support for two weeks, following months of recovery in 2018 after his colon burst as a result of his opioid use. Perry shared in 2022 that the doctors had told his family he had a “2 percent chance to live”.
His recovery was no short of a miracle which helped him get sober. While promoting his book, he mentioned that he had been sober for 18 months and shared that it was not an easy process. Mathew Perry also worked to help others become sober. He turned his Malibu Beach home into a men’s sober living facility named The Perry House.
He once spoke to the media and said, “I’ve a lot of ups and downs in my life and a lot of wonderful accolades, but the best thing about me is that if an alcoholic comes up to me and says, ‘Will you help me stop drinking?’ I will say, ‘Yes, I know how to do that.’”
What happened to Mathew Perry?
Perry died Saturday, October 28, 2023, in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home. Law enforcement responded to his home around 4 p.m. and discovered him unresponsive. He was pronounced dead. The L.A. coroner’s office has not established the cause of death yet. An investigation is underway to learn the cause of death.
