Maxwell Pennebaker, Mississippi State University Student Found Dead in Parking Lot

Maxwell Pennebaker, a student from Mississippi State University’s Starkville campus, was discovered dead inside a parked car on campus on Sunday, August 27, 2023. Authorities have located him deceased in a parked car on the Mississippi State University (MSU) campus.

MSU’s Chief of Police, Kenneth Rogers, said that shortly after 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, the university’s police department got a distress call informing them of a person unconscious inside a parked car.

Pennebaker was officially pronounced dead at the scene by Oktibbeha County’s Coroner Michael Hunt. His specific cause of death is yet unknown.

The official news of his death was announced by Mississippi State University’s Facebook post:

“The male driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene by Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt, Mississippi State University, and the police are looking into a student fatality found in a parked car on campus. At approximately 1:10 p.m. on Sunday, according to MSUPD Chief Kenneth Rogers, a phone call was received reporting the finding of an unconscious person inside a parked car.

Investigation into the deceased is still ongoing. MSU won’t have any more comments until Monday, August 28, at noon. In this sad and trying time, the university requests privacy for this student’s family and friends.”

Investigations into the occurrence were being conducted on the scene by MSU PD, Starkville Fire Department, Med-Stat Ambulance employees, and Coroner Hunt. According to Rogers, this incident posed no threat to the remainder of the campus, and regular business has since resumed.

According to Vice President for Student Affairs Regina Hyatt, the institution will offer counselling services and other support to any students or staff affected by the incident.

Following Max’s passing, Mississippi State University’s president  Mark Keenum and his wife, Rhonda Keenum, expressed their condolences to the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity members late Sunday and reassured them that there are counsellors and support resources available to them while they grieve.

Maxwell Pennebaker belonged to Mississippi State University’s Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He graduated from Madison Central High School and resides in Madison, Mississippi. People claim Max was intelligent and brave. He was a valuable team player in addition to being an excellent academic.

Maxwell truly enjoyed participating in school-related activities. In addition to his academic success, he was also compassionate and helpful. He was always there for his buddies and anyone else who needed help. Prayers for Maxwell. Rest in Peace, young man.
