Peg McKamey Bean, a Southern Gospel singer of ‘The McKameys’ group, passed away on December 26, 2023, from complications related to a stroke she suffered on December 11, 2023. The veteran Hall of Fame artist was 80 years old at the time of her death. The band announced the sad news on social media on Tuesday.
Who was Peg McKamey Bean?
Peg McKamey Bean was a renowned gospel singer and a founding member of the professional Southern gospel group ‘The McKameys.’ She was a native of Clinton, Tennessee, and grew up in a household of a Christian minister father. She and her sisters used to sing at church. One day, her sister Dora announced that they would sing at their local church on Sunday as a trio. It marked the beginning of their band, The Mckameys.
In 1957, Ruben Bean joined the trio as the group’s guitarist; two years later, he and Peg got married. Together, they have two daughters, Connie and Sheryl, who joined the band in 1972 when their aunts, Dora and Carol, retired. The band currently includes Ruben and Peg Bean, Sheryl Farris, Connie Fortner, Roger Fortner, and Eli Fortner.
The group performed their final concert in Knoxville, Tennessee, on November 23, 2019. The Mckameys, on average, performed around 150 bookings annually around the United States and Canada. The group has the honor of 16 No.1 singles and was recognized by Horizon Records in 1999 for having the most No.1 hits in the history of Southern Gospel music. The group also holds the record of having the highest of No.1 songs on Singing News magazine’s charts.

The band said on social media that Bean had been admitted to the hospital due to a stroke and asked for prayers from friends, fans, and well-wishers. The community rallied behind The Mckameys and uplifted them in their prayers. But despite an outpouring of their kind prayers, Peg Mckamey Bean passed away, leaving family and friends aggrieved and the community mourning.
Peg had endured medical challenges before. On December 27, 2017, she received a triple bypass surgery. She faced these challenges with enormous courage and resilience. She continued to spread the message of peace and kindness through her musical talent despite the physical challenges she had to face.
The continued prayers and support of her family, friends, and fans gave her courage, and she fought for her life. Sadly, her time to reunite with her maker had been decided by the Devine, and she passed away after suffering a stroke. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fans.
