Raphael Dwamena, a Ghanaian football player, tragically passed away in Albania during a league match on Saturday, November 11, 2023, while playing for his team, Egnatia, against Partizani.

In the first half of the game, Dwamena, the leading scorer in the Superior of Albania, suffered a heart attack and collapsed. He was promptly taken to the hospital but did not recover. After returning to Austria, he played for FC Zurich and Austria Lustenau before securing a significant transfer to Levante in Spain.
Despite facing career-ending incidents, Dwamena relocated to Albania, seeking another chance at success. He notably scored in his first game for the Ghanaian national team during his nine appearances with the Black Stars.
The news of Dwamena’s passing was shared by Aragon Deporte through a Facebook post, stating: “#ÚltimaHora, Raphael Dwamena passes away. The player collapsed during a match in Albania this Saturday. He played nine games for Real Zaragoza during the 2019-2020 season.”

Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and community. Funeral arrangements have not been publicly announced. Let us remember Raphael Dwamena in our thoughts and prayers; may he rest in peace.
Dwamena, a talented striker, enjoyed a successful season in the Austrian first division in 2016–17. However, his progress was hindered by a recurring heart problem. A potential transfer to Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League in 2017 was thwarted after a medical examination revealed a cardiac ailment.
After undergoing surgery to address the issue, Dwamena was cleared to play in January 2020. Despite using a defibrillator while playing, he tragically passed away during a recent match in Albania when medical personnel were unable to revive him. Despite suggestions to give up football due to his recurrent cardiac issues, Dwamena expressed his eagerness to play as long as he was in good health.
The fact that he passed away despite using a medically approved defibrillator is surprising. Dwamena began his professional career with Austria Lustenau after leaving Red Bull Salzburg. Additionally, he played for Velje Bodklub, BW Linz, FC Zurich, Levante, Real Zaragoza, and KF Egnatia.
