Suminda Sirisena, a Sri Lankan veteran actor, passed away on Monday, December 4, 2023, after battling a longtime illness. He was 75 years old at the time of his passing. He had graced Sri Lankan cinema, theatre, and television with his talents and won many accolades.
Who was Suminda Sirisena?
Kala Keerthi Suminda Sirisena was born on July 4, 1948, in Bossella, a rural village in Kegalle, Sri Lanka. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences from the Open University of Sri Lanka and Master of Arts from the University of Sri Jayewardenpura. He began his acting career in 1967 with a lead role in the stage drama Girikutha, which was selected for the final round of the State School Drama Festival.
He held many jobs and was briefly associated with politics but quit after his ideals conflicted with the party’s practices. In 1984, Sirisena worked in Thilak Gunawardena’s dramas. He worked in the plays Sapatheru Hamine by Miyuri Samarasinghe and Meepura Wasiyo by Somaratne Dissanayake. He joined the drama group of Ediriweera Sarachchandra and acted in renowned stage dramas, including Maname, Sinhabahu, Bavakaturawa, Mahasara, and Kada Walau. In 1993, he won the Best Actor Award for a role in Kadathurawa at the State Drama Festival.
In 1985, he debuted in the television industry with the teledrama Sihina Nimnaya. He garnered widespread appreciation for his role in Hicchi Mahattaya, his second television drama, Kumarihami. He worked in over 40 television series, with the most notable role of his television career being ‘Isaa’ in the critically acclaimed serial Charitha Thunak. He debuts in cinema with the role ‘Upali’ in the 1976 film Dhululu Malak. His other renowned cinema projects are Saptha Kanya, Yakeda Pihatu, Uppalawanna, Samanala thatu, and Ira Handa Yata.
What happened to Suminda Sirisena?
In May 2012, Suminda Sirisena was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Colombo National Hospital due to sudden illness and fever. He had been struggling with his health issues ever since. He had faced difficulties with walking, due to which he had been taking physiotherapy treatments. He passed away on December 4, 2023, at a private hospital at 75, surrounded by loved ones.
He is survived by his wife, Leela Sirisena, and their two sons, Prabhath and Nanditha. His legacy will live on in the timeless contributions he made to the entertainment industry and the impact he made with his kindness on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.
