He was the son of professional wrestler and promoter Dory Funk and Dorothy (Culver). Funk’s family moved to Amarillo, Texas, when World War II ended, and Terry and his brother, Dory Jr., grew up in the professional wrestling industry there.

Funk played football and amateur wrestling while attending West Texas State University (now West Texas A&M University) after finishing high school, went from “just being just a wrestler” to became a household name, leaving a lasting impression on the wrestling scene.
